About Joe

Over the last 20 years, Joe Hopkirk has worked with some of New Zealand's most complex organisations — the Department of Conservation, Greater Wellington Regional Council, Environment Canterbury, and the All-of-Government Covid-19 response among them. Across partner-led conservation programmes, large-scale regulatory transformations, and intergenerational strategy frameworks, he's consistently been the person organisations turn to when the stakes are high and the path forward isn't clear.

It started with a Philosophy degree — learning to question assumptions, sit with uncertainty, and understand what drives people. An MBA, training in Liberating Structures and Cynefin Sensemaker added rigour and complexity to that foundation. The result is an approach clients and colleagues notice: Joe asks the right questions at the right moment, helping people think more clearly about problems they've been stuck on. He thinks differently — and that has impact.

He works with leaders and organisations to design adaptive strategies, build real organisational capability, and develop the people to deliver it — through consulting, coaching, mentoring, and masterclasses grounded in his organisational maturity approach. Underneath all of it is a genuine belief that being human — understanding people’s values, building trust, meeting people and organisations where they are — is what makes systems work and change last. People like working with him. That's not incidental. It's the point.

What people say

“Joe brings serious thinking power to his work. He can take an initial idea or brief, unpack the complexity and put it back together in a way that feels clear and logical without losing sight of the audience or the context.”

– Mark Nelson, Project Manager, Environment Canterbury

“Joe has a unique ability to help people navigate complexity with clarity and confidence. His coaching is thoughtful, values-driven, and grounded in asking the right questions - the kind that challenge your thinking and create genuine insight. I came away from our conversations with not only clearer direction, but also practical frameworks and ways of thinking that I continue to apply in my work today.”
